Little Alf's Brooke Adventure

We teamed up with our #EveryHorseRemembered ambassador and leading children’s author Hannah Russell and her pint-sized pony Little Alf to bring you an interactive adventure!

This is the story about Little Alf’s travels to see Brooke in action helping working horses, donkeys and mules. Every day our supporters voted on where he would go and what he would see next, and on the final day we asked them to name his new friend.

Monday: Little Alf has arrived at the airport with his rucksack packed and passport at the ready, he's on an adventure to find out the amazing work Brooke does!

Tuesday: After a long flight Little Alf has landed in Afghanistan.

Brooke has been working in Afghanistan since 2008 in partnership with the Dutch Committee for Afghanistan (DCA), an organisation which trains paravets to improve veterinary services for working horses and donkeys.

Wednesday: Little Alf has visited one of the 870 brick kilns in Afghanistan. The majority of the horses, donkeys and mules’ work consists of transporting wet and dry bricks by cart or pack within the kilns and to building sites for use in the construction industry. These animals carry many tonnes of bricks every day and they can suffer from serious health and welfare issues caused by the environment in which they work.

As well as offering emergency treatment and vaccinations, Brooke also works closely with local service providers such as farriers, saddlers and cart makers which are often difficult for poor communities to access.

Thursday: Little Alf is at the equine owning community in Afghanistan and is learning all about the work Brooke does.

In these communities, Brooke and the DCA work with equine owners to strengthen their knowledge of animal welfare, and support prominent community members to spread positive animal welfare messages to the public. They also work with local vets, harness makers and traditional healers to ensure their services meet good animal welfare standards.

Friday: Little Alf has been working overseas in Afghanistan all week finding out about Brooke’s work. He’s visited brick kilns and an equine owning community and found out about the work Brooke does to help working horses, donkeys and mules and the families who rely on them.

But what's the name of his new friend?

On his adventure, Little Alf's found out about the amazing work Brooke does, and along the way made a new friend. Meet Bumble the donkey!

Congratulations go to Emma Gorman from Dorset for the winning name.
