Resources & Approach
The Brooke works to improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules through the alleviation of suffering and the development of animal welfare practices and facilities to reduce suffering in the future
Our approach: veterinary
Our veterinary approach is based on assisting the provision of preventative and treatment services to working equine owning communities, both in the short- and long-term
Our approach: community development
Improvements to the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules come from the communities themselves, helped and guided by the Brooke.
Our approach: expanding our work
We take a sustainable approach to expansion into new countries to ensure that we make lasting improvements in the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules
The 6th Colloquium
More than 60 organisations from 32 countries came together in India for the 6th International Colloquium on Working Equids, which explored the theme learning from others.
Our research
In support of our evidence-based approach we publish a number of papers to share learning about equine animal health, behaviour and welfare.
Our small grants initiative
Organisations that work in countries where the Brooke doesn’t, can apply for a grant through our small grants initiatives.
Our partners
The Brooke operates in partnership with a variety of organisations in order to extend the range and impact of our work.
Our events
Through the year, the Brooke plans a programme of high-profile events to influence positive welfare improvements for working horses, donkeys and mules
Our work: Afghanistan
Traditionally, paravets provided care for sheep and cows but lacked the detailed knowledge to help horses and donkeys. We are currently working in partnership with the Dutch Committee for Afghanistan to help paravets deal with the complexities of equine illness
