5,000 animals dead in Pakistan's worst regional flooding in history

Brooke Pakistan is providing aid to communities and animals.

Pakistan has lost thousands of farm animals to its most destructive flooding season in history across regions, prompting food insecurities.

An estimated 5,584 animals, including horses, donkeys, mules, goats and sheep, have perished during flash floods, landslides and cloudbursts across the country.

As the lifeline for households across Pakistan and worldwide, farm animals, particularly horses, donkeys and mules, are essential in helping with agriculture and carrying water.

By protecting animals, we are protecting entire communities from long-term suffering.

Farm animals, including horses, donkeys and mules, are a lifeline for many Pakistani families.

This comes as a reported two million people have been affected by flooding, with 1,400 villages under water leading to the destruction of infrastructure, electricity shortages, lack of sanitation, water and shelter.

Brooke has initiated its disaster relief response to aid the crisis in Punjab and the north-west Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Dr Javed Iqbal Gondal, CEO of Brooke Pakistan, said: “We are working around the clock to keep Pakistan’s working horses, donkeys and mules alive during this devastating crisis.

“These animals are the heartbeat of rural families - without them, people lose their ability to earn an income and put food on the table."

Two million people have been affected by flooding in Pakistan.

Brooke Pakistan is providing humanitarian and animal relief – offering emergency veterinary services and supporting the resilience of animal-owning families.

The charity’s work will benefit 1,000 working animals and 6,000 animal-owning families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, working with Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority and Livestock Department

In 2022, Brooke played a pivotal role in the recovery of communities and animals during one of Pakistan’s worst floods in history, setting up mobile veterinary clinics and constructing water pumps and shelters.
