Your legacy to the Brooke

Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever write so we recommend using a solicitor to ensure that all the legal formalities are correctly followed. Knowing your Will is valid and that it expresses your exact wishes will give you peace of mind.

To remember working animals in your Will, by leaving a gift to the Brooke, it is important to understand that legacies to charities come in several different forms, for example:

  • Residuary legacy: part of your estate remaining after family and friends have been looked after
  • Pecuniary legacy: a lump sum of money
  • Specific items: real estate, jewellery, antiques, or shares

Charities are exempt from inheritance tax, so you may also reduce the tax burden on your estate.

Suggested wording to take to your solicitor

For a residuary legacy

“I give the whole of my estate (or x% of the residue of my estate) to the Brooke Hospital for Animals of 30 Farringdon Street, London EC4A 4HH, Charity Registration No. 1085760 for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Legacy Programme Manager or other proper officer of the Brooke Hospital for Animals shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.”

For a pecuniary legacy

“I give the sum of £x to the Brooke Hospital for Animals of 30 Farringdon Street, London, EC4A 4HH, Charity Registration No. 1085760 for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Legacy Programme Manager or other proper officer of the Brooke Hospital for Animals shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy”.

And if you want to make sure that the sum of money you’re leaving now will have the same relative value at the date of your death as it does now, you should include the following wording after the above:

“The amount of this legacy to Brooke Hospital for Animals shall be regarded as a provisional amount only and the amount payable shall be that provisional amount or if greater that provisional amount index linked to the retail prices index from the date of this Will to the date of my death”.

For a specific gift

“I give my (description) to the Brooke Hospital for Animals of 30 Farringdon Street, London, EC4A 4HH, Charity Registration No. 1085760 for its general charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Legacy Programme Manager or other proper officer of the Brooke Hospital for Animals shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy”.
