Brooke delivers petition to Amazon UK over donkey skin trade

Brooke has delivered a petition to Amazon UK calling on the company to stop selling products containing ejiao, a gelatine made from donkey skins that is linked to the global donkey skin trade.

Learn more about the donkey skin trade

Every year, over six million donkeys are killed for their skins. This brutal trade is driven by global demand for ejiao, a gelatine made from donkey hides and used in cosmetics, traditional remedies and even everyday foods.

Backed by nearly 60,000

On 22 September, Brooke CEO Chris Wainwright joined Brooke Ambassador Dr Scott Miller and colleagues from East and West Africa at Amazon UK's London headquarters to hand in the petition.

Backed by almost 60,000 signatures, the petition calls on Amazon UK to remove products containing ejiao from its marketplace and prevent similar products from being sold in future.

Ejiao is used in some traditional medicines, health products, foods, drinks and cosmetics. Millions of donkeys are slaughtered each year for their skins to produce it, with serious consequences for donkey welfare and the communities that depend on these animals for their livelihoods.

A message from the frontline

For millions of people around the world, donkeys play a vital role in daily life, helping families earn an income, transport goods, carry water and access education and healthcare. Demand for donkey skins has placed growing pressure on donkey populations in many countries, and Brooke colleagues from East and West Africa brought the experiences of affected communities directly to Amazon UK.

A significant campaign milestone

The campaign has also been backed by public figures who helped raise awareness of the issue, including Joanna Lumley, Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, Rory Bremner and Annette Badland.

Brooke CEO Chris Wainwright, Dr Scott Miller and Brooke leaders from around the world all had important messages from outside Amazon UK headquarters.

What happens next?

Brooke is now asking Amazon UK to respond to the petition and set out what action it will take to address products containing ejiao on its marketplace.

The hand-in is an important milestone but Brooke's work to end the donkey skin trade continues. We will keep working with supporters, partners and decision-makers to protect donkeys and the communities that depend on them.
