East Africa
We set up the first Brooke East Africa office in Kenya in 2013, and since then have gradually expanded into Somaliland, South Sudan, Tanzania and part of Northern Uganda.
Egypt
The Brooke Hospital for Animals Egypt’s mission is to realise a sustainable improvement in animal welfare in its area of operation.
Ethiopia
With one of the highest population of equines in the world, Ethiopia naturally has some particular animal welfare needs. Brooke Ethiopia has been working on these since the first project started in 2006.
Latin America and Caribbean
Brooke Latin America and Caribbean (BLAC) currently works in Nicaragua and Honduras. and also worked in Guatemala until 2023.
Nepal
There are thought to be approximately 100,000 working horses, donkeys and mules in Nepal.. Since 2007, Brooke has worked in partnership with Animal Health Training and Consultancy Service (AHTCS) to bring positive changes for their welfare.
Pakistan
We’ve been helping working animals, and the families that depend on them, in Pakistan for over 30 years.
West Africa
We have worked in Senegal since 2010 to improve conditions for the country's working horses and donkeys. In 2016 we started working in Burkina Faso and we continue to explore the potential for expanding our work further in West Africa.
Brooke India closes
It is with profound sadness that, after 25 years, our Brooke India operations will be closing.
Since 2001, the exceptional teams, partners and valued communities we worked with have dramatically changed the lives of millions of horses, donkeys and mules.
In recent years, due to changes to India’s regulatory environment for charities, Brooke India has been engaging with authorities to ensure that the arrangements put in place when it was first created were still appropriate. As part of this engagement, Brooke India applied for registration under the Foreign Contribution (Regulations) Act (FCRA) in December 2024.
During the process, regulators indicated that aspects of the current structure may not fully align with current regulatory requirements.
As a result, Brooke UK is unable to provide further funds to ensure the continuation of operations. With no viable alternative, Brooke India’s leadership have taken the extremely difficult decision to end our charity operations in the country.
How we decide where we work
Our teams bring together local animal health practitioners including vets, paravets (a community-based animal healthcare worker), farriers (hoofcare specialists), animal welfare experts, local communities, development specialists and national and international stakeholders for policy and advocacy work.
We realise that suffering occurs all over the world and wish we could help working donkeys, horses and mules everywhere. But with limited funds and resources, we must work in areas where welfare needs are greatest and where we can have the biggest impact.
These include countries with:
- High numbers of working horses, donkeys and mules with high welfare needs
- Communities which rely on animals to earn a living
- High levels of human poverty (using the United Nations’ Human Development Index)
- Potential partner organisations with a common goal
- Adequate security for our staff to work safely.
