Decide on an event or challenge

Your event can be anything you like, from holding a cake sale, coffee morning or dinner party, to organising a clothes swap, raffle or dress down day.  For fantastic fundraising ideas, have a look at our A-Z of fundraising ideas and Fundraising handbook, sure to give you some inspiration.

Alternatively you could get sponsored to do something daring such as a head shave or skydive, embark on a challenge such as a run, walk or bike ride, or sign up for an overseas challenge for the ultimate experience of a lifetime.

Plan, prepare and publicise

Once you have decided what you want to do you can start to plan and get people involved. Follow the steps below to ensure your event is successful, safe and fun.

Plan

After you’ve come up with an idea, it is useful to write a simple fundraising plan that you can refer back to as a guide at any stage. When planning your event, please do contact us as we can provide you with a variety of materials to help make your event a huge success, such as leaflets, bunting, posters, collecting tins, and more.

If you wish, we could even help you promote your event to a larger audience by putting details on the events listings page of this website. Simply get in touch by emailing community@thebrooke.org or call 0207 653 5812.

Plan your own event

Prepare

Creating your own JustGiving page will make fundraising even easier. JustGiving is a really simple and effective way for people to sponsor you immediately online - and stops you having to chase people for the money that they promised you! Creating your own JustGiving page is easy.

Gift Aid increases the value of donations to the Brooke by nearly a third, at no extra cost to you or us. If your sponsors or event guests are UK taxpayers, please ask them to tick the box on the sponsorship form or fill in this Gift Aid declaration form if they are able to do so.

Publicise

Spending ten minutes online to publicise your event can make a huge difference. Use websites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to tell your friends about what you’re doing and why to encourage them to show their support.

You could also display posters and leaflets in your workplace, school, library and local shops - the list is endless. Or why not send out personal invites to make people feel extra special? Talking to your colleagues, friends and family about your event is a great way to spread enthusiasm and encourage people to get involved, you can also ask them to spread the word too!

Getting in touch with your local paper or radio station is a great way to publicise your event. Make sure you give the media enough notice to cover the story (generally about two weeks prior to the event), and send them lots of details about what’s happening, who will be attending, why you are holding it, how much you hope to raise, when/where it is happening, and your contact details. For more information, read Promote Your Event.

If you need advice on how to do this, just contact the Brooke Press Office on 020 3012 3456 or email press@thebrooke.org
