Decide on an event or challenge

Your event can be anything you like, from holding a cake sale, coffee morning or dinner party, to organising a clothes swap, raffle or dress down day.  If you are unsure of what you want to do, visit our ideas to inspire pages, which will help you find the perfect fundraising activity for you.

Alternatively you could get sponsored to do something daring such as a head shave or skydive, embark on a challenge such as a run, walk or bike ride, or sign up for an overseas challenge for the ultimate experience of a lifetime.

Plan, prepare and publicise

Once you have decided what you want to do you can start to plan and get people involved. Follow the steps below to ensure your event is successful, safe and fun.

Plan

After you’ve come up with an idea, set yourself a fundraising target, as this gives you something to work towards and can encourage your supporters to be a little more generous. Think about who will be able to take part in the event or sponsor you and make sure you are realistic when setting the target. If you can try and raise at least three times as much as you plan to spend.

Think about about tasks you may need help with and ask your friends and family if they would like to get involved.

We can provide you with a variety of materials, some of which are downloadable from this page. Contact our Fundraising Team on 020 7470 9393 or email community@thebrooke.org, if you need anything else, such as balloons, t-shirts, running vests, pin badges and posters.

Plan your own event

Prepare

Creating your own JustGiving page will make fundraising even easier. JustGiving is a really simple and effective way for people to sponsor you immediately online - and stops you having to chase people for the money that they promised you! Creating your own JustGiving page is easy.

Gift Aid increases the value of donations to the Brooke by nearly a third, at no extra cost to you or us. If your sponsors or event guests are UK taxpayers, please ask them to tick the box on the sponsorship form or fill in this Gift Aid declaration form if they are able to do so.

Publicise

Spending ten minutes online to publicise your event can make a huge difference. Use websites such as Facebook and Twitter to tell your friends about what you’re doing and why to encourage them to show their support. You could even add the event details to your email sign off.

Put posters around your local area, use word of mouth and perhaps you could get in touch with the local press. Make sure you give the media enough notice to cover the story (generally about two weeks prior to the event), and send them lots of details about what’s happening, who will be attending, why you are holding it, how much you hope to raise, when/where it is happening, and your contact details.

If you need advice on how to do this, just contact the Fundraising Team on 020 7470 9393 or email community@thebrooke.org. We can also advertise your event on our website, just contact us on the number above.

Remember often the best way of promoting your event is talking to your colleagues, friends and family about why you are supporting the Brooke and what difference this will make. This may even encourage them to spread the word too!
