India: partnerships

Brooke India has been working with a range of local partner organisations, since mobile operating teams first started treating animals in 1992.

India partnerships

Brooke India started working to alleviate the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules in 1992.

It now works with an expanded network of animal welfare specialists and development organisations, forming strong bonds with local people who depend on these animals for their livelihoods.

Action for Rural Women and Development has been helping marginalised communities to combat poverty in India since 1993, launching a community-based programme tackling common equine health problems 14 years later.

The programme dealt with issues such as hoof abnormalities, worm infestation and hobbling as well as providing training on how to provide good quality feed and medical care.

The programme started with over 1,000 horses and donkeys in nearly seventy locations and hopes to double this reach in 2011.

Some of the most vulnerable people were targeted such as farm labourers, the disabled and migrant workers, via Sarvodaya Ashram, a local organisation in Uttar Pradesh.

This programme provided sustainable high-quality veterinary services, promoting equine welfare, and has helped reduce the suffering of over 3,000 animals.

Today, to help achieve this goal, we have teams in Delhi and elghteen districts of Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest concentration of working horses, donkeys and mules in India. We also work in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarkhand and Rajasthan.
