Empowering women to be agents of change
A Reception at Clarence House Hosted by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall 31st January 2012
Leading women from the worlds of equine, sport, science and show business gathered today at Clarence House to celebrate the vital role women play in driving change in the developing world and improving equine welfare in particular.
Hosted by Brooke president HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, attendees included television presenter Clare Balding, trainer Jenny Pitman, Brooke patron Sir Peter O'Sullevan and other key supporters from the UK and the USA.
“Women can play a powerful role in bringing about change and through its training The Brooke is equipping women in many rural communities, with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to make improvements for the future wellbeing of their animals and their families,” said HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.
That includes working with inspirational women such as Dr Sabira Nazir. The first female vet at the Brooke in Lahore, Pakistan, who trains Lady Livestock Workers and helps owners understand how to care for their donkeys and horses.
“Lady Livestock Workers share the knowledge and skills they have learnt in Brooke training, helping to spread the message of improved equine animal welfare,” Dr Nazir says.
Brooke chief executive Petra Ingram said she was determined to reach out to more women across the world.
"I know that there is still much to do. I know that we are still only reaching a small number of the women who could benefit from our help. But I also know that we are making great progress, we are making a positive difference.
"Women know how to care for their working animals, they know how to help each other, and they have the skills and experience to teach girls to follow in their footsteps. They are becoming powerful role models in their communities. They are becoming agents of change.
