Kidist in Ethiopia
How a Brooke training programme in East Africa is bringing about better diets for working horses and donkeys.
Brighter future thanks to local partnership
Kidist Demere lives in Lemo, Ethiopia, with her husband and young son. She relies on her donkey and two horses to transport grain and water. Kidist is among a group of women who have benefited from training organised by the Brooke.
The Brooke has been working in partnership with the Kulumsa Agricultural Research Centre and local government, to help animal owners understand the importance of providing horses and donkeys with nutritious and balanced feed.
Animal owners take the lead
Kidist was feeding her animals hay and fresh grass but following her training she is now growing different types of feed on her land.
"Previously the plot of land was for my cattle only, but I’ve learnt that my equine animals need equal treatment and attention. I’ve set aside a piece of land to grow feed for them.
Now I am growing nutritious feed like oats. I’m looking forward to receiving training that will teach me about feed management and storage for the coming long dry season. I would like to say many thanks to the Brooke and its partners for teaching these new skills,” adds Kidist.
After training, Kidist now feeds her donkey a variety of healthy foodstuffs. ©The Brooke
