Billu and Jugnu - help donkeys have peaceful births

Jugnu and Billu's story

One owner we met in Pakistan, Mohammad Aslam, was very concerned about his mare, Jugnu. His usually active mare was reluctant to work. He didn’t realise that she was desperately trying to tell him she needed to be with her newborn foal, Billu. She was so anxious about the little one, it was making her weak and prone to illness.

And Billu wanted to be with his mum too! He was only three weeks old - far too young to spend long days away from his mother.

The Brooke team’s solution was simple, but vitally important: plenty of fresh green fodder for Jugnu so she could produce

the nourishing milk Billu needed. They also advised a little less work for the new mother, more rest and some quality time for Jugnu and Billu to relax together.

A happy ending

Both Billu and Jugnu are so much happier now. Jugnu works shorter hours, and Billu often goes out with her to work. Billu is not working himself but he loves to trot along beside his mum. They get regular rest breaks too when Billu can suckle and the pair can play together and enjoy their loving bond. Your gift will help Brooke vets in countries like Pakistan and Kenya give vital support to pregnant mares, and lifesaving advice to owners for their animals’ pregnancy and for the future of their foals.
