Remember the Horse Heroes

The Brooke celebrated World Animal Day on October 4th 2009 by remembering and honouring the 'horse heroes' – the millions of horses, donkeys and mules working around the world in times of war and peace. These animals undertake backbreaking work in terrible conditions, and we called on all our supporters to remember these forgotten heroes.

During the lead up to World Animal Day on October 4th, the Brooke asked everyone to show they cared about and remembered the horse heroes by leaving messages of support and remembrance on our dedicated Remember the Horse Heroes website.

From Australia to Africa, hundreds of supporters from across the globe added their messages to our special interactive map creating a worldwide message of remembrance.

In the lead up to the day, Gunner Lane - a serving Gunner with the Kings Troop, Royal Horse Artillery - laid a wreath with her mule, Meg, to commemorate the start of the Brooke's campaign.

As part of The Kings Troop I work closely with these magnificent animals on a daily basis and know just what loyal and hardworking companions they make. So many thousands have suffered and died and millions more horses, donkeys and mules continue their loyal service across the world today. Let us all take a moment to remember the Horse Heroes everywhere.

A day of remembrance

The campaign culminated on World Animal Day on Sunday 4 October when we held a special tribute and shared these messages at the Animals in War Memorial in London. We attached all your messages to a giant horse shoe and laid wreaths at the site, as well as holding a one minute silence to commemorate Horse Heroes worldwide.

You can take a look at photos from the day and read all the tributes left by supporters worldwide, or even leave your own - it's never too late to pay your respects and show that you remember the 'Horse Heroes'.
