'Best kept' donkey awards

Owners from the village of Menieha in Egypt were eager to take part in Brooke organised competitions at the end of last year, which were not only enjoyable but also helped promote good animal welfare.

The aim of the main competition was to find the five best kept donkeys in the village. The competition was judged by Brooke vet Dr Alaa, and Brooke welfare assessor Dr Abdu. They examined the general body condition of the animals, their cleanliness, the condition of their teeth and hooves, and whether the animals were free from wounds.

Proud winners

The proud winners received a Brooke certificate, a small prize and a new harness for their donkeys. The competition attracted many owners who watched the evaluation by Brooke vets to learn how to look after their own hardworking horses and donkeys better, and the owners who took part in the competition were eager to show off how healthy their precious animals were.

Brooke also arranged a celebration ceremony which was attended by around 100 villagers, community leaders and the village mayor. The Brooke team distributed the prizes and gave speeches on the main animal welfare issues in Menieha village and then invited owners to discuss ways of maintaining good animal welfare. Through introducing an element of fun to animal welfare, we are able to reach out to even more owners in our quest to ‘change hearts and minds.’
