Devon couple walk more than seven uphill marathons for Brooke
Two vets from Barnstaple complete the 194-mile Wainwright Coast to Coast challenge for Brooke.
Hannah and Kiera, 30 and 31, both farm vets working for Devon based company Torch Farm and Equine, braved seven solid days' walking from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, covering an incredible 194 miles, and ascending 8,550m. They even took their dog, Brynley. The walk covers the breadth of the UK, scaling rough and hilly terrain through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire moors. They trained for months on the hilly Devon coast path, before starting the main walk on 31 May. They reached the end on 6 June.
Hannah and Kiera were exhausted but victorious after the trip. Hannah said:
“This has been such an epic journey, and I’m so glad we did it. Brynley didn’t do the whole walk – we didn’t want to tire him out – he only has little legs!
“It was tough, and I have the blisters to prove it. The hardest part was the gale force winds and hail we saw in the Lake District. But it was worth it - there was a massive sense of achievement for us at the end of the last day.”
The couple chose Brooke, a global animal welfare charity helping working horses, donkeys and mules. It works with owners, communities, governments and international organisations to make lasting improvements to animal welfare. Hannah explained;
“My granny, Audrey, was passionate about all aspects of animal welfare and my aunty Mary had a lifelong passion for horses, so it seemed really fitting to raise money for the Brooke, a great charity that Kiera and I have been supporting for a while too.”
