Older donkeys, worked too hard.

Understanding their needs

Millions of poor people rely on animals to earn the money they need to support their families, but life can be hard for these faithful friends - and especially those who are worked too hard in old age. When older animals are overworked, they can suffer terribly from aching limbs and painful joints. Many owners don’t realise that their horses and donkeys need more consideration and care because of their age.

Making changes

Older animals can carry on working happily for their owners - but only if they receive the special care and rest they deserve. The kindness of Brooke supporters is helping us to address these issues with training for owners and veterinary treatment for animals.

Thanks to this direct training, many older horses and donkeys are healthier and happier – and can still help to support their owners and families.

Older animals need special care

Spreading knowledge

Older animals need extra vitamins and mineralsMany misconceptions still arise from traditional beliefs; for example, some owners believe that donkeys become lazy if they are given water.

Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, numerous Donkey Care Clubs have been started in schools, teaching pupils about the rest and special care needed by older animals. The pupils can then pass these lessons on to their parents at home.

How you can help

Like people, older working animals deserve the very best treatment after years of hard unceasing work for their families. A donation to the Brooke can help to ensure that we reach more older animals, in some of the world's poorest communities.

We know that times are a little harder at present, and we are especially grateful for support and donations during a period when we all have a little less money to spare.

Anything you can give can make a difference

  • £18.86 will ensure a donkey will receive all the fodder, vitamins and minerals he needs for a whole month.
  • £35.68 could pay for a months supply of medicines for a Brooke clinic in Pakistan, including treatment for older donkeys’ aching joints.
  • £48.49 could pay for a training session in Pakistan for owners on how to care for their older animals.
  • £71.30 could provide five days’ supply of nutritious, easily digestible fodder for 30 animals in a Brooke clinic in Egypt.
  • £127.35 could keep a vet at work for five days in Pakistan, treating sick animals and helping owners care for them better.
