Help us to beat the heat this summer

Dehydrated donkey with heavy loadIf you’ve been to Egypt or India in the summer before you’ll know how fierce the sun is.

It’s easy enough to avoid it on holiday – but for the donkeys and horses who must carry bricks or transport heavy loads to market, there’s no escape, and their long and exhausting working days are made even worse by the intense heat.

How does the Brooke help?

One of the main ways we help horses and donkeys suffering in the intense heat is by training owners. Training is such an essential part of our work because many animal owners live in remote communities where knowledge is passed down.

When it comes to animal care, many of their beliefs are misguided and extremely harmful - for example, many owners believe that their animals do not feel the heat, because they never complain.

Other ways we help are by:

  • Administering fluid therapy to animals who have collapsed
  • Working with communities to build shade shelters
  • Training owners so they recognise signs of distress, such as head nodding, flared nostrils, rapid breathing and apathy.
  • Ensuring owners know how to keep their animals comfortable and safe in the height of summer

How you can help

Donkey drinking at a water troughUnfortunately, we can’t change the weather - but we can prepare. A little goes a long way in the countries we work in and anything you might be able to give can help. Below are some typical costs of essential items and training sessions to beat the heat:

  • £15.11 buys a temporary water trough in Pakistan
  • £36 covers four days of training for owners in good animal care, at the brick kilns in India
  • £55 pays for a week’s medication to treat a dehydrated animal
