The dangers of dehydration - Chandni's story

Chandni collapsedHazrat, from Ghaziabad in India, had just bought his young mare – Chandni, but was shocked when she suddenly collapsed. He immediately called the Brooke team in the area and explained to Dr Shikha:

“My mare suddenly started sweating like somebody poured buckets of water on her. She collapsed and now she’s unconscious.”

After examining Chandni, Dr Shikha confirmed that the poor horse was suffering from dehydration and was too far gone to drink, so Dr Shikha urgently administered fluid therapy.

Thankfully, Chandni responded well and was able to stand less than an hour later. The Brooke team advised Hazrat to keep Chandni cool for a few more days, give her saline water to drink and add salt to her feed to help prevent further dehydration.

Chandni was lucky to be reached by a Brooke team before it was too late. However, there are thousands more horses and donkeys suffering in extreme heat this summer who still need our help.
