30 adventurous Brooke supporters have just returned from a 200km horseback odyssey into the heartland of the Rajasthan countryside in India
The journey through this beautiful and dramatic rural landscape, known as ‘Land of the Kings’, took in 400-year-old castles, volcanic outcrops and ancient palaces.
The Brooke ride was a vital fundraising project and, so far, has raised over £90,000 for its work in India.
Each rider found ingenious ways to raise the £2,500 required to take part, including offering belly dancing lessons, holding a ball at a racecourse and even creating a calendar of Staffordshire’s farriers – wearing nothing but leather aprons!
As part of their experience the riders saw first-hand where their money was being spent. They spent a day in Jaipur and another in Delhi watching the Brooke vets in action in the community, treating animals and educating owners.
One of the riders, Ruby Grimshaw, a physiotherapist from Brighton, was particularly struck by the dedication of the Brooke vets: “We were fortunate enough to see the vets in action and to witness the respect and admiration they enjoy from all the owners,” she says. “The compassion and dedication of the teams was humbling to witness.”
Co-rider, Mary Ravnkilde from Somerset, echoed that view, adding: “When I found out that the money I raised could go towards funding a vet, it made all my hard work fundraising seem worthwhile. I realised what a massive impact it would have in India, where so little goes so far."
For all the riders, it was an unforgettable adventure: “What an experience,” said Nina Wilson Soppitt from Surrey. “It was hot, dusty and hard work but given the opportunity I’d do it all again tomorrow.”
