The Countries

Training

Training animal owners and people involved in working with horses, donkeys and mules is at the heart of the Brooke’s work because it means the positive change our work brings about will last.

One to one training

When an owner brings an animal to one of our teams, we can help them understand what the cause of any problem may be and how to prevent it in future.

  • cleaning eyes (encouraging the owner to monitor the health of the eye)
  • using mixed types of feed, including leafy fodder to keep the animal well nourished and less prone to illness and more able to recover from wounds
  • giving the animal regular water and rest
  • not overloading the animal

Training local people

Only by making sure the right knowledge and skills are in local communities can we bring about long term improvement.

In many of the countries where we work, many owners still rely on local healers to treat their animals so the Brooke spends time with the healers to guide them into adopting the best possible animal care practices.

We also work with local farriers, saddlers and harness makers to develop good designs produced with local materials.

Community programmes

The long term purpose of our community programmes is making animal welfare sustainable. We involve communities and concentrate on their understanding of animal welfare, enabling them to take responsibility for the better care of their animals.

One example of a successful community project Brooke has funded is a radio programme in Kenya

Reaching children

Wherever we work many children also work. They are often caring for animals whose work brings in their family's only source of income. Sadly, some of them are working with animals just to survive on their own because they have no family.
