Blind faith - preventing blindness through simple steps

In some areas, over 80% of the horses, donkeys and mules we see are suffering from eye problems. Brooke vets offer free treatment and guidance to owners to help them improve the health of their working animals’ eyes.

Daily cleaning of the eyes

Our vets advise owners how to remove dust and dirt from the eyes morning and evening. This encourages them to pay closer attention to their animals’ eyes so they spot any problems before they become more serious. Brooke vets sho owners the importance of cleaning their animal's eyes

Correctly fitting bridles & blinkers

Fly fringes help prevent horses and donkeys from developing eye infectionsWe encounter lots of animals with deep wounds and sores around the eyes caused by the rubbing of ill-fitting bridles and harnesses.

The tissue surrounding the eye is incredibly delicate so irritation and damage to the skin can easily occur.

Well fitted, well cared for bridles and blinkers help prevent eye injuries so our vets show owners how to fit head gear correctly to reduce the risk of infection.

Brooke vets explain to owners how easily eyes can become infected by germ carrying flies and show them ways to prevent this from occurring.

Fly fringes and repellents help keep flies away and provide more comfort for hardworking animals.

A balanced diet

Giving animals good quality food can help maintin healthy eyes © Frederic CoubertA balanced diet is essential for maintaining healthy eyes so our vets advise owners how they can feed their animals correctly, ensuring they are more likely to recover quickly from any infections that may occur.

A combination of green fodder and grains such as maize, bran and barley ensure that animals are provided with all the right nutrients.

Early treatment

We stress to owners the importance of taking their horse or donkey to a qualified vet or local animal health provider as soon as they notice any sign of pain, redness or cloudiness in or around the eyes.

The quicker any problems are noticed, the more chance there is of a full recovery.

These simple measures really do make a huge difference and are contributing to a better future for animals.

Our vets show owners how important it is to take their animal to a qualified vet urgently when they notice any sign of pain or irritation to the eye
