Twelve-year-old Azim Khan’s donkey Chitta works hard for her master. She has to – Azim is the breadwinner, with eight little brothers and sisters relying on him. Every day, after school, Azim and Chitta brave burning heat and blinding dust to struggle to and from the brick kiln, transporting crippling loads of bricks. Azim is devoted to his loyal little donkey, so when she collapsed to her knees one day, he was distraught.

Azim had heard that the Brooke would treat his donkey, free of charge, so he hurried straight to our Peshawar clinic in northern Pakistan. Brooke vet, Dr Iqbal saw that Chitta was in terrible pain and desperately dehydrated. He quickly gave her water and treated the agonisingly raw packsaddle wounds on her back. Meanwhile, Brooke worker Zahir Shah showed Azim how to groom her, clean her hooves and mend and fit her saddle comfortably, to prevent further suffering.

Every month, Brooke reaches more than 50,000 horses and donkeys through our mobile vet teams, field clinics and community training programmes – many of these animals rely on Brooke to survive.
