Help save working animals from deadly blood diseases

Right now, in countries like India, countless horses and donkeys are at risk from deadly blood diseases like Surra – a debilitating and potentially deadly disease, borne by flies. Last year, Brooke vets treated over 1,600 cases in India alone – but thousands more suffered, untreated. Now that summer is here again the flies are multiplying.

Every £4.75 you give today could save a working horse or donkey from suffering and death

Surra is a horrible disease. The poor animals who are infected start to shiver, despite the heat, and lose weight – their energy leaves them as they grow weak and desperately emaciated. In the later stages their hind legs can completely fail, their muscles wasted. The end is death. To watch an innocent creature suffer this way, uncomprehending and exhausted, is a dreadful experience.

Deadly blood diseases cause terrible suffering for working horses like this one

The fly that causes Surra

This cruel disease is spread by a tiny fly – the stable fly that flourishes wherever horses and donkeys are kept. Its name is Stomoxys calcitrans and it is multiplying by the billion in India. It bites through the skin, and in doing so injects the microscopic organism which causes Surra into the flesh.

Undiagnosed animals still have to work

Tragically, the early symptoms of Surra can easily go unrecognised, especially by owners who may not be aware of the disease, or know how to recognise the signs of infection. They may simply think their animal is tired, and push the poor, weakened creature even harder. But when owners do this they reduce their animal’s ability to fight the disease: endangering its life, and their own livelihood.

The Brooke spreads knowledge and understanding

The Brooke is committed to reducing and preventing the suffering caused by Surra. Our teams train volunteers within communities to act as animal health workers. These local people are given basic first aid skills and shown how to diagnose common equine problems – including Surra.

The Brooke trains owners on ways to prevent Surra, how to recognise the symptoms and steps to take to treat it - so fewer working animals will suffer

Effective treatment costs just £4.75

The medication that treats an animal with Surra costs just £4.75. This treatment – along with plenty of rest – can literally mean the difference between life and death. As the fly season once again begins to take its toll on working horses and donkeys overseas, we are urgently appealling to friends like you to help us reach them

It costs just £4.75 to treat one horse or donkey afflicted with Surra

In poor communities, Surra is threatening the lives of thousands of working horses and donkeys, and the people who rely on them for all of life’s necessities. Surra can devastate lives of whole families, dragging them into terrible poverty. Our work to treat this dangerous disease, and show people ways to prevent it – or spot its symptoms early enough – is only possible with your help

Simple steps, dramatic effects

Prevention is better than cure, and simple steps can hugely reduce the risk for a community’s animals. The stable fly breeds on standing water, so improving drainage, spraying insecticide on areas of stagnant water during the season, painting stables with lime and using insect-repellants can all help keep biting flies away.

Towards the same end

Above all else, poor owners want to keep their loyal horses and donkeys healthy. Brooke mobile vet teams devote their working days to bringing immediate relief from pain and suffering, and training communities to give their animals the best possible quality of life.

Anything you can give could help end the dreadful suffering caused by Surra – your gift today could save the lives of horses and donkeys, and keep families from terrible poverty and hardship.

From July until October is the critical season for Surra. It costs just £4.75 to treat one horse or donkey afflicted with Surra. Anything you can give will help us ease their suffering.
