Brooke appeals for local fund-raisers to join UK’s summer charity drive for working equines overseas Running a half marathon on a hobby horse, selling a homemade magazine, sky-diving from 10,000 feet … Just some of the wild and wonderful ways Brooke supporters are planning to generate cash to help working equine animals in a national summer charity appeal. And the Brooke, the UK’s leading charity for the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules in developing countries, is appealing for people across the country to join in its month-long Horses in Need fundraising drive during July. The Brooke runs a network of mobile equine ambulances in developing nations from Guatemala to Kenya and Pakistan, taking compassion and care to over half-a-million sick, injured and abused working equines each year. By ensuring these faithful animals are happy, healthy and fit for work the charity benefits the several million desperately poor people on whom they depend for survival. And the charity also works alongside owners showing them how to care properly for their animals. Money raised by Horses in Need will enable Brooke’s vets and community trainers to reach even more suffering equine animals. Last summer’s event generated £150,000: `This sum has since enabled us to reach nearly 28,000 more horses, donkeys and mules, and the 170,000 poor people who depend on them,’ says the John Trampleasure, Brooke’s Fundraising Director. `People can organise almost any event, the more fun the better: we’re offering prizes for the most original. As well as sponsored walks, rides and picnics this year we’ve got someone cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats and children being sponsored for eating only fruit for two days!’ Those who sign up to Horses in Need will get their own free fundraising page online, enabling them to share pictures, videos and sponsorship information - to register simply phone 0845 367 0999 or visit www.thebrooke.org/hin. Anyone raising more than £20 will be automatically entered into a prize draw for a Nile cruise holiday for four, courtesy of leading travel company for holidays in Egypt, Discover Egypt (www.discoveregypt.co.uk).
