Step by painful step...Jugnoo's story

Jugnoo suffers step by painful stepJugnoo – a cart donkey living in the desperately poor tented community of Talianwala in Pakistan, earned the little money his poor owner, Mrs Haleema, relied on to buy food and medicines for her and her children.

So when a disastrous collision with another vehicle injured Jugnoo’s hip, leaving him so lame he could not walk, let alone work, the family was plunged deeper into poverty. Mrs Haleema was forced to borrow what little her poor neighbours could spare, just to keep her children from starving.

The injuries to Jugnoo’s hip must have been agonising and pain and distress were clear in his body language. Thankfully, Mrs Haleema knew of the Brooke and our mobile vet team – led by Dr Amir – were able to help her and Jugnoo in the following ways:

  • Dr Amir administered a painkiller injection
  • Jugnoo’s wounds were cleaned and dressed
  • Jugnoo was given medication to get rid of any parasites such as worms and give him a better chance to fight the infection
  • Mrs Haleema was given all the information she needed to help Jugnoo regain strength, and understood of the importance of letting her donkey rest for a few days. She would lose a little income but would be rewarded with a fitter, healthier donkey

Jugnoo was lucky. He was one of the working animals reached by the Brooke. Our teams reach so many horses and donkeys each year - but many thousands more are still working in agony, without ever receiving the care they need.
